Tales from a Game Warden
Books
For over twenty years, John Walker served as a Conservation Officer for the State of Michigan. During much of that time he wrote a weekly article for the local newspaper. After he retired, he began taking many of those stories, as well, as other "new" stories and began to compile them into a book. And then another book was written. And then another.

Walker recently completed his ninth self-published book entitled,   Remember! Someone’s Watching You!

"The idea for the books came about on the night I retired," said Walker. "Some friends that attended my retirement party gave me a great gift. It was a hardback, leather bound book written by a game warden from another state. It seems that everyone likes a good game warden story, even a retired game warden."

While the gift was a nice idea, Walker objected to the strong language used in the book. "Friends and family members asked if they could read the book when I was done with it, but I wasn’t half way through the first chapter when I knew that I wouldn’t let anyone read that book," noted the former Michigan game warden. "The language used ruined the whole book for me. I was not raised to talk that way, so I decided there must be a need for a book that people of all ages could read without having to hide it from their kids or the kids hiding it from their parents," said Walker.

"From the hundreds and hundreds of letters I’ve received and the more than 80,000 copies of my books I have sold, it appears there was a little niche for my type of books."

All nine books contain humorous family-style backwoods short stories.

Walker, who began his career with the Conservation Department (later the DNR) in 1966 in Tuscola County, in Michigan’s Thumb area, is now retired and writes of his experiences.

"Even if you do not hunt or fish, the great outdoors is there for all of us to share and enjoy."

"The most important thing you must remember is that whenever you go out into the outdoors whether it be hunting, fishing, hiking, or camping you are just building memories. You must also remember that the day will come faster than we want when all we will have left is the memories we have enjoyed with family and friends," Walker says.

"My dad told me years back that it seems that the older you get the faster the years seem to go by. This may be true and at my age I know it is, but it seems like you bring a new baby home from the hospital and before you know it they are off to college and striking out on their own," he says. "So enjoy your spouse, the kids, and your friends while all of you are still able to build memories."
